Flexible nursing shifts are gaining traction.I recently read a great article in Becker's Healthcare by Mariah Taylor. It discusses how Mercy Health's St Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, Ohio, is using “creative shifts” that fit the diverse needs of its staff. The system allows for unconventional shifts such as:â–Ș 12-hour shifts starting at any time â–Ș 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedulesâ–Ș Schedules for new mothers. â–Ș Flexibility with weekend shifts. The flexibility is available for everyone. And the results are solid. The flexible scheduling has helped reduce nurse turnover rates from 23% during the height of the pandemic to 12.5% today, she said.Congrats Cory Werts and the Mercy Health system. This is progress. My big question about this great success story is whether they used technology to achieve these stellar results.According to the article, the hospital utilizes a centralized staffing and scheduling department - likely a group of people.Scheduling the old-fashioned way is hard work—there are dozens of ever-changing moving pieces, which makes it difficult for humans to keep up and maximize efficiency. I’d love to learn more about their approach, which led to such a great outcome! I am proud to share that M7 Health is helping hospitals achieve outcomes like St. Rita’s Medical Center’s - without increasing headcount.M7 leverages staff preference data to devise staffing models that include non-traditional shift types to meet the workforce’s work-life needs. We’re making nurses’ jobs more sustainable and helping hospitals stabilize their workforce to meet patients’ needs. #nursinginnovation #nursesonlinkedin

This is a fantastic start! In addition, we should know the patterns in our environment such as volume by day, churn by hour, etc. and match staffing resources by skill to meet these demands based on data! Much of what seems to be unpredictable in healthcare really isn't. And, why are we STILL using ADC when the MODE is much more accurate with less variability?!

As a nurse-driven media company, it is extremely important for The Nursing Beat to attend traditionally non-nursing conferences to facilitate the forward progression of our profession. Why you ask? 👉#Nurses must be involved in politics so that they can shape regulatory requirements and safe patient conditions. 👉Nurses must be involved in #fashion and design so that they can help build medical apparel that makes their job efficient. 👉Nurses need to participate in technology #innovation because they are the end-user of many products. As a #clinician, have you ever looked at a #healthcare product and thought, why was it made this way? It doesn't make sense. I'm pretty sure all 3 million nurses in the U.S. would raise their hand. We have to put ourselves in rooms where no nurse exists so that the public understands the depth of value we carry. #nursesonlinkedin

The landscape of health care changes fast. Advancements occur at lightning speed. And yet one relic has remained unchanged for decades: the nurse call button. But why? Reflecting on this stagnation prompts us to consider the incredible progress we've made in other areas of health care. Take, for instance, the story of the Kennedy baby – born prematurely during JFK's presidency. Despite access to the best care available at the time, the baby tragically did not survive. Fast forward to today, and we possess the remarkable ability to save premature babies born as early as 22 weeks. Such advancements underscore the vast strides we've made in medical science and technology. However, amidst this progress, the workload for nurses has intensified. With increasingly complex patient needs, including more medications, charting requirements, and sicker patients, nurses are stretched thin. While some tasks could be delegated to other health care professionals, many requests still funnel through the nursing staff.Attempts to introduce technology into patient rooms, such as Alexa devices or iPads, have often led to more distractions and added burden for the nursing team. Recognizing the need for innovation while preserving efficiency and patient experience, we embarked on a journey to reimagine the role of the nurse call button.Enter Helen – our novel solution that modernizes patient care. Rather than burdening nurses with non-clinical requests, Helen uses connected apps in the patient rooms and the hands of nurses to redirect non-clinical requests to a dedicated team. We affectionately call these people Helen concierges. This innovative approach gives immense time and energy back to nurses and reserves the call button for its original and intended purpose: urgent medical needs.Feedback from our multiple pilot programs has been overwhelmingly positive. Nurses report saving an average of one to two hours per shift, previously spent on fulfilling non-clinical requests. Patients, too, view the introduction of Helen as a welcome enhancement to their hospital experience, giving them comfort and control like never before. While our pilot program is not without its challenges, we remain committed to continuous improvement. After all, that’s what true innovation requires. As we celebrate Nurses Week, let us reaffirm our dedication to alleviating the burdens faced by our incredible nursing staff – and help them return to the work they love. To the nurses who tirelessly care for our community, your unwavering dedication and compassion inspire us all.#NursesWeek #HealthcareInnovation #NurseCallButton #PatientCare #HealthcareTransformation #InnovationInHealthcare #Nursing #PatientExperience #HealthcareAdvancements
