BELFAST - On May 9, 2024, Belfast, Maine, resident, former college professor, and longtime political activist Karen Saum, died peacefully at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast, Maine, with one of her three sons and her only grandson at her bedside. Karen was born in Colón, Panama, where she lived until her senior year in high school, when she and her family moved to Marin County, California. After high school, Karen attended Stanford University, where she met her future husband, Dr. Richard Reichard, who was doing post-doctoral work at Stanford. After completing her undergraduate degree at Stanford, Karen raised three sons while completing an all-but-dissertation at Johns Hopkins University. In the 1960s, Karen taught history at Brooklyn College and Manhattan College, and she began a long career of political activism. She protested against the Vietnam War in the early 1960s, well before the war's unpopularity sparked major protests. She also protested for civil rights, and marched with Martin Luther King Jr. and militant civil rights leader, Kwame Ture (then Stokely Carmichael). Later, in the early 1970s, Karen took up the fight for women's rights. In 1968, Karen and her three sons sailed on the SS Maasdam of the Holland America Line from Montreal to Southhampton, England, where the family picked up a Volkswagen camper bus, which became their home for the next year as they traveled around Europe. In 1969, Karen moved to Maine, which became her home for the rest of her life. Karen taught history at the University of Maine Augusta for several years, and later learned videography under the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act, and produced two videos: "Working Women of Waldo County" and "I Knew a Phoenix," on the life of her friend and renowned poet, May Sarton. In 1981, Karen went to work for H.O.M.E. Co-op in Orland, Maine, an organization that creates employment for, and provides a wide variety of services to, the low-income community of Hanco*ck County and beyond. At the co-op, Karen founded the Rural Education Program, an innovative program that brought college within reach of rural workers, primarily women and single moms. Karen also lived at Mandala Farm, a back-to-the-land, economic empowerment community in the woods of East Orland. H.O.M.E. Co-op and Mandala are members of the worldwide Emmaus movement, and Karen relished the Emmaus connection, going to global Emmaus meetings in Italy and South Korea, and volunteering at the former Emmaus House in Harlem, NY.Karen also wrote four published mysteries, two self-published books, a children's mystery, and a collection of short stories about growing up in Panama.Karen spent the last 16 years of her life in Belfast, Maine. Karen was active in the community of Americans living in the U.S. who had lived in Panama, and she supported the Museo Afroantillano, a museum that preserves West Indian traditions in Panama.Karen is survived by her three sons, Peter Reichard of Greensboro, North Carolina, Lawrence Reichard of Belfast, Maine, and Stephen Reichard of Portland, Oregon; by her brother, Jack Saum Jr. of Cambridge, Maryland; and by four grandchildren, two great-granddaughters, two nephews and a niece.A service for Karen will be held at the H.O.M.E. <![CDATA[Bangor Daily News: Obituaries]]> (6)

Feb 14, 1944 - Marilyn Dwelley, 80, died on June 12, 2024, following a long illness. She was born on February 14, 1944, in Calais, Maine, the daughter of Mary Elizabeth (Bette) and Earl Gaddis. She grew up in Baileyville, and graduated as valedictorian from Woodland High School in 1962. She then attended Westbrook College and graduated in 1964.Marilyn devoted her career to helping children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. She spent decades with the Head Start program in Washington and Hanco*ck counties before moving to the Wings organization. As a result, there are people throughout the state - the oldest of whom are now in their 50s - who may not remember or even know of Marilyn, but whose lives were changed for the better by the work she did.She was a lover of lavish seasonal decorations, her nightly 8 o'clock Lifetime movies; Diet co*ke, and the music of Willie Nelson and Adele, as well as Dolly Parton (who she was thrilled to see in concert in 2016) and Elvis Presley (who she would've seen in concert in 1977, had he not died the day before). She loved to play cards and other games, and despite her sweet nature, she was quite competitive and early on helped her grandchildren learn how to lose to her with grace.Though her life was often marked by challenges both unique and universal, she faced each with a relentless determination to keep going. She'd be the first to tell you that her persistence wasn't always graceful, but her ability to get back up was often nothing short of remarkable. There is no doubt that all of us will remember her as one of the strongest women to have blessed our lives.Marilyn was as kind and loving as she was strong and resilient. She could always be counted on to send a card for a birthday, graduation, or just about any major (or even minor) holiday. She was one of those people you could always count on during a low moment - whether the end of a bad relationship or just a bad day. At all times she was there with an empathetic ear and loving hug. There is perhaps no role that she relished more than being a grandmother. Affectionately known to her three grandkids as Nannie, she was an inexhaustible source of support and encouragement. Over the years, she spontaneously became an avid fan of baseball, hockey, swimming, scrappy middle school rock bands, and just about anything else her grandkids were into. She was a fixture at sporting and musical events, known simply as "Nannie" to so many, and an enthusiastic supporter to all.Marilyn is survived by a loving community of family and friends, each of whom surely believe they had a special bond with her, and they are all correct. Marilyn was predeceased by her parents; and her brothers, Earl (Sonny) and James (Jimmy) Gaddis. She is survived by her two daughters, Mila Tappan and husband, Robert, and Becky Anderson and husband, Liam; three grandchildren, Alex Tappan, Noah Tappan, and Ellie Anderson; her sister, Karen Sprague and husband, Kenny; her nieces Kellie Sprague and husband, Steve, Kriste Sprague and her husband, Jeff, and Lysa D'Innocenzo; and her nephews Trent Patterson, Britton Bestafka, and Jonathan Gaddis. She is also survived by her former brother-in-law, Bill Dwelley and sister-in-law, Wanda Murphy, who were still family to her even after divorce; her former partner and dear friend, David Cox; her close friends, Barb Sproul, Margie Alberts, Ellie Nevers, Margaret Coleman, and Ruth Anne Spence; and her very kind caregiver, Diane MacNamara. We love you to the moon and back, to infinity and beyond, and we'll see you on the other side. The family would like to thank the wonderful medical professionals who've taken such good care of Marilyn over the years, especially Dr. David Martin who held a very special place in her heart.A celebration of Marilyn's life will be held on Sunday, July 21, at the Bangor Arts Exchange from 12-2 p.m. Those who wish to remember Marilyn in a special way may do so by donating to Downeast Community Partners (https://www.downeastcommunitypartners.org/donate-volunteer/donate-online.php), an organization that works to support many of the causes that were most important to Marilyn including Head Start and assistance for seniors that allows them to age in place.

INDIAN TOWNSHIP - Our loving son, uncle, brother, friend, and family to many, Mark Anthony Stevens II, unexpectedly passed away on June 9, 2024. In Bangor, Maine, on January 28, 1987, Mark Anthony Stevens I and Jackie Stevens blessed us with who we will all remember, Little Mark.Little Mark is like Christmas day, a holiday he so dearly loved. A time that brings us joy, happiness, and peace, filled with laughter, smiles, and presents under a bright Christmas tree. Little Mark brought this same joy into each and every one of our lives. Whether it was lighting up a room with his smile or making the dullest moments illuminate with cheer by being the jokester he was. Just like the Christmas carols he enjoyed so much, he was festive, worth celebrating, memorable and wonderful, connecting us all. He was like hugging a big teddy bear you were just gifted with, so kind, gentle, and caring. In fact, Little Mark owned and cared for a co*ckatiel bird, Peety. He loved to fish and to go camping yet he also had a love for watching WWE wrestling, never missing a night of Monday Night Raw and WrestleMania, that's true dedication and passion attributed to his character. Little Mark enjoyed playing a game of pool at local billiards with friends and family and playing video games. Aside from Christmas music, he loved listening to all types of music from Jimi Hendrix, Rock, and 60s throwbacks. Little Mark had all the qualities of a great song you want to sing along too; a beautiful symphony coming together into one person. He marched to his own drum, reminding us every day to enjoy the beautiful life that surrounds us. Family was so important to Little Mark, it cannot be stressed enough how kindhearted, protective, and compassionate he was. Everything he loved was rooted in love and family values. He was and will forever be the star, that angel on top of all our Christmas trees, shining brightly over all of us.Little Mark was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Eugene L. Stevens Sr. and Freda (Ranco) Stevens, along with his maternal grandparents, William "Bill" Lyle and Teresa May Carlysle; brother, Lance Moholland; sister, Eva May Meader; aunt, Dale Borrows; his uncles, Howard and Timothy Stevens; and best friend, Leon Robinson. He is survived by parents, Mark Anthony Stevens I and Jackie Stevens; brothers and sisters, Beth and Tom Meader, Mariah Thurlow, and Jillian Mendoza and brother-in-law, James Mendoza; nephews and nieces, Carl and Darren Ripley, Gabriella and Luis Mendoza, Stephen and Montana, and Ahmiah and Sophia Thurlow; many uncles, aunts, cousins, in-laws, and friends (where there are so many to name) including aunts Edith Turner and Sharon Wiskow; sister-in-law, Lori Levasseur; and close friend and "his protector" Skye Stevens. Visitation will begin 11 a.m Monday, June 17, 2024, at The Pines in Indian Township until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2024. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Father Roland Berngeh 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at St. Ann Church, Peter Dana Point. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais and Eastport. Sep 30, 1947 - Margaret "Peg" Gray, 76, of Pittsfield, Maine, and Puerto Vallarta, Yelapa, Mexico, passed away peacefully at her home in Pittsfield on June 8, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family.Born on September 30, 1947, in Rockland, Massachusetts, Peg was the cherished daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Strachan) Condon. Her early years were spent in Seattle, where she formed lasting memories and friendships. Peg graduated from Renton High School with the class of 1965, a milestone that marked the beginning of her journey. While on a blind date in the bustling coffee shop at Logan Airport's Coffee Shop, Peg met her soul mate, Michael Gray. Their love story blossomed and they exchanged vows in 1970, embarking on a journey of unwavering companionship. After starting their family in Alabama, where their daughter, Christine, brought joy into their lives, they relocated close to Mike's hometown in Maine, drawing closer to Peg's family in Massachusetts. Before long, their loving family was completed with the arrival of their son, Jaime. They settled into their charming home in Pittsfield, where their hearts found peace and contentment.Throughout her career as a flight attendant with Eastern Airlines, Peg touched countless lives with her warmth and grace. Beyond her professional endeavors, Peg was deeply rooted in her community. Peg was an integral part of the Pittsfield Players, contributing her talents as a cast member and showcasing her skill in costume makeup, including serving as chairman of the Pittsfield Community Theatre, which she loved dearly. She also played a pivotal role in establishing Sebasticook Family Doctors, where she served as the inaugural chairman of the board and she also served as a member of the SVH auxiliary board. Peg's compassionate spirit extended to her advocacy for breast cancer awareness. She was a moderator for iVillage, an online breast cancer support group.Traveling was a passion shared by Peg and Mike. They explored so many places together including Hawaii, the Bahamas, and all over Europe. They treasured their winter sanctuary Casa Amarilla, in Yelapa, Mexico, crafting cherished memories that would warm their hearts for years to come.Peg found joy in simple pleasures: indulging in chocolate martinis, expressing her creativity through crocheting, cross-stitching, and her woodworking crafts for her small home business, Attic Treasures. Her fondness for dachshunds was evident, as she welcomed many into her heart over the years and her eyes would light up at the sight of her favorite snack, Marshmallow Peeps.Peg's legacy of love lives on through her devoted husband, Michael; her children: Christine Brunette and husband, Bernie; Jaime Gray and partner, Amina Kayyal; and her adoring grandchildren: Patrick, Meghan, Brody, Maxwell, and Brooklyn. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Janice; and brother, John. The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to Julie, Kayle, Kenize, Kim, and especially to Karen Belmain, and her cherished dog, Brooke, who provided invaluable care and friendship to Peg. <![CDATA[Bangor Daily News: Obituaries]]> (35)

ORLAND - Susan Perkins Dunlap, 94, of Orland, and formerly of Bar Harbor, died peacefully at home after a brief illness on June 8, 2024, with her family by her side. She was born Susan Abbott Perkins on June 4, 1930, the first child of John Ward Noble Perkins and Azaline Trabeau (Pritchett) Perkins in Anniston, Alabama, the city her forebears had founded, and was baptized in the Episcopal church they established, St. Michael and All Angels.Susan was an honor student and a member of the National Honor Society at Anniston High School. She studied studio art, painting and etching at the Art Institute of Chicago. There, she met Robert Dunlap who was studying architectural sculpture on the GI Bill. They were married in 1951.In 1954 Susan and Bob decided to leave Chicago with the hope of raising their children in the country and making a living with their art. With deliberateness they bought a pickup truck and drove to Maine, with their young daughter and newborn son. They eventually found their way to Bar Harbor. They purchased a saltwater farm in Town Hill and settled there with their growing family. Making use of their art degrees and problem-solving skills, they established The Pottery and produced high-end stoneware by hand for twenty years while they also started the family farm. They raised milk goats and sheep, and Susan and Bob learned animal husbandry as they produced lambs for the Easter market in Boston, milk goats, and even commercially farmed strawberries. If Susan didn't know how to do something, she taught herself: plumbing, welding, tree grafting, and repairing complex equipment were among the challenges she did not shy away from. She also pursued her artwork in diverse media, including oil painting, pottery, enameling, wood cuts, stained glass, mosaics, and textiles. She mixed and created all the glazes for the pottery. In 1970, Sue had an idea for a cottage industry that would employ people on MDI year-round. She and Bob started a new venture, imported Hattersley looms from Keighley, UK, and created the Dunlap Weavers. In 1989, Sue and Bob sold their holdings in Bar Harbor and relocated to Orland, where they built a new home and continued with the work of The Dunlap Weavers. Susan never retired and worked every day up to her final illness. Within weeks of a successful heart valve surgery in 2023, Susan was back to working her wood splitter at home.As artists, Susan and Bob collaborated on several commissions, and their work can be found in many places in Maine and beyond. Her stained-glass windows are at St, Saviour's, Bar Harbor, and St. John's in Southwest Harbor. She and Bob produced all the artwork for St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Millinocket.Susan was a devoted wife and mother, who never hesitated to raise her children and grandchildren up when they needed help, whether the problem involved was a last-minute bake sale, a costume for a school play, a disappointment in school, or a new venture in life. Her trademark trait was kindness. She was a quiet and determined person who loved to garden, enjoyed reading, math, and science. She made toys by hand for each of her five children, created stories for them, and even illustrated one that she considered publishing as a children's book. She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, John "Sonny" Noble Perkins; her nephew, John Ward Perkins; an infant son; and her beloved husband of 51 years, Robert Gordon Dunlap. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Josephine Cooper and her husband, Donald, of Lamoine, and their children, John, Lily, Eric and Robert; son, Sam Dunlap and his wife, Paula Moody, of Bar Harbor; daughter, Gulley Dunlap and her husband, Alex Smith, of Orange, New Hampshire, and their children, Nathaniel, Alasdair, and Azaline; daughter, Jennifer Dunlap of Orland; and son, Matthew Dunlap and his wife, Michelle Dunphy of Old Town, and their daughter, Emily. She is also survived by her nephew, Nathan Snowden Perkins; and niece, Dr. Susan Perkins Ciolino. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the medical staff of Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center and Northern Light Home Health and Hospice, especially Kristen Bagley and the hospice care team that allowed our mother to cross over to the promise of the Lord in dignity.A funeral service will be held at St. Saviour's Episcopal Church in Bar Harbor, on June 17 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family invites those who wish to contribute in Susan's memory to Friends in Action, P.O. Box 1446, Ellsworth, ME 04605, Hospice Volunteers of Hanco*ck County, 14 McKenzie Avenue, Ellsworth, ME 04605, or any organization that is important to you. His sons took a very close second place in his life. They were his pride and joy. He instilled in them a love of family first. He taught them the value of hard work and pride in living a good, honest life. He appeared to the outside world to be a gruff man, but he had the softest heart and gave the world's best bear hugs, planting kisses on the foreheads of all who were lucky enough to be embraced by him. He was also a scoutmaster, a tinkerer, a woodworker, a shop owner, a leader in his communities, and a most honorable man. His presence loomed large, and his loss is deeply felt amongst his family and friends. His legacy will live on through his family and friends. His wit and wisdom are legendary. He preferred to sit back and listen, but when he had something to contribute, it was a doozy. His grandchildren have a notebook of some of his most memorable one-liners, which will be passed down through generations of Pokrywkas yet to come. A private memorial and interment was held in Los Angeles for the family.

<![CDATA[Bangor Daily News: Obituaries]]> (58)

PORTLAND - Harrison "Lefty" Homans passed away on Memorial Day, May 27, 2024, at age 96. Lefty was born in Bangor, Maine, on January 5, 1928, to Harry and Lida West Homans. Doted on by his mother, two older sisters and childless aunts, Lefty began his life as he ended it, surrounded by family and friends who adored him for his easy going nature, abundant charm, boyish grin, and love of a good time.Lefty graduated from Bangor High School, Fryeburg Academy and the University of Maine. He enlisted in the Army in 1946, spent time in Japan as part of the occupation force and finished his service as a motor pool driver in Washington, D.C., for the Pentagon. It was at the University of Maine, after his discharge from the service, that he met Margaret "Peggy" Thompson, who he married in 1955 and spent the rest of his life with. He was also fortunate to enjoy lifelong friendships with many of his college classmates and Kappa Sigma fraternity brothers until he became the last man standing.Lefty and Peggy settled in Bangor, and raised their two children, Fritz and Amy, in Lefty's childhood home on the middle block of Maple Street. Over the years, he declined promotions that would have required the family to move out of state. Lefty did not want his children to leave their friends and teammates, or the life he and Peggy were providing to them in a small city close to oceans, mountains and lakes. As a result, he gave them the gift of an idyllic childhood in Maine, with summers spent in a cottage on Penobscot Bay from which he commuted to and from work.In 1981, with an empty nest, Lefty and Peggy moved to Bath, Maine where they quickly made new friends and entertained frequently at their comfortable home on High Street. After a long career in sales, Lefty retired from Brockway Smith Company in 1993 and soon after, he and Peggy began dividing their time between Maine and Sun City Center, Florida. In 2002, they returned to Penobscot Bay where they spent summers in their cottage in Bayside village to be closer to their grandchildren. More friends, both young and old, again were quickly made.Although small in stature, Lefty was a gifted athlete who competed well into his 90s in both golf and swimming. Always looking for a way to earn spending money as a boy, Lefty began caddying at age nine and golfed every year thereafter until his eyesight failed him at 95. For many years, he competed in one or more senior leagues around the state, regularly winning his age group during the summer schedule of tournaments. As much as Lefty loved to win, what he most enjoyed was the comradery with his friends, especially those in his regular foursomes as they drove to and from the tournaments together and dissected in great detail the day's events. In his 50s, Lefty saw how much fun Peggy was having as a member of the Maine Masters swim team and decided to join, despite having only basic swimming skills. He became an accomplished swimmer over the ensuing decades, regularly competing at regional and national events around the country, and earned All American honors as a member of a relay at nationals. At 94, Lefty was still driving himself to the pool four mornings a week where he swam for an hour and was home for breakfast by 8.Lefty was also a lifelong downhill skier and he and Peggy spent many winters skiing at Vail and in Europe. He attributed his lack of ski injuries to what he described as his "survival crouch," which served him particularly well on Maine's icy slopes where he taught his children to ski and in his 80s skied with his grandchildren.Social to his core, Lefty made and diligently maintained countless friendships in his professional, golfing, swimming and skiing worlds. His well-worn address book was truly a thing to behold.Fully committed to fitness, Lefty was undaunted by the restraints imposed by COVID restrictions and during the winters of 2020 and 2021, he bundled up and walked four to six miles a day in all weather in his daughter's backyard in Portland. Snowstorms delayed his outings only as long as it took to snowblow paths around the yard. Needless to say, Lefty was not among those who gained weight or fell into physical disrepair during home confinement.A true son of Maine, Lefty knew every backroad and short cut to anywhere and everywhere. He loved driving through Maine best of all, but also lived for a good road trip. One memorable trip involved a three day drive from Florida to Maine, with two cats who stubbornly resisted sedation and yowled incessantly, but did not deny Lefty the simple pleasure of the open road. Lefty was also unparalleled in his ability not only to pack a U-Haul trailer, but in maneuvering it through Labor Day traffic on multi-lane urban highways in order to deliver his children and their belongings to their respective universities and apartments. He was at his finest making the required quick lateral traverse across three lanes of traffic to access Storrow Drive in Boston, from the north.Lefty's children were certain that his proudest achievements in life were his five holes in one. However, he was without question a loving father who spent years driving his children around New England, Canada, and the East coast to swim meets, standing on pool decks officiating their meets and rolling bleary-eyed into the driveway on countless Sunday nights, hours before the start of his workday. He was also the father who stood in the street at night after dinner and threw a baseball or football to anyone who wanted to play, gave pool deck pep talks to his children's friends before their events, and was reliably generous with his good humor. As a proud grandfather, he pitched in to help with infants and toddlers whenever needed and thoroughly enjoyed every stage of their young lives, especially after they were old enough to share a good laugh and private jokes.Lefty was predeceased by his son, Frederick "Fritz" Homans; and his sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Hanco*ck and Gertrude McNally. He is survived by his wife of nearly 69 years, Peggy; his daughter, Amy Homans; grandchildren, Hannah and Harry Homans, and Noah and Nathaniel Youngren; former son-in-law, Harold Youngren; special Hanco*ck and McNally nieces and nephews; and dear friend, Leanne Pedro. Friends and family alike will remember him for his quick wit, charm, warm friendship, love of a good story, contagious grin, and twinkling blue eyes. (Lefty was likely the only person who could manage to make a prosthetic eye twinkle.) He was universally adored and will be missed by all.In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in Lefty's name may contribute to the Northport Golf Club, P.O. Box 187, Belfast, ME 048915, and dedicate the donation to the Junior Golf Program.A celebration of Lefty's life will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at 11 a.m. at The Belfast Boathouse, 34 Commercial Street, Belfast, ME. A private interment will be held later this summer in Casco Village, Maine, a place cherished by Lefty since 1945.Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hanco*ck Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543.
