🚀 FROM PLANETS TO PBL - AMERICAN PROFESSOR FINDS PBL-INSPIRATION IN AALBORG 🌌Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering is among theglobe'spremier engineering institutions and is,like Aalborg University, dedicated to problem-based learning (PBL).Therefore, Professor of Computational Physics and Planetary Science Carrie Nugent found it to be "a good match", when she left Olin College earlier this year to spend six months at AAU Materials and Production as part of a Fulbright Scholar program.During her stay, she has seen the potential to integrate PBL into the student's project work independently of required classes. This creates space for freedom and creativity among the students.- I believe that intrinsic motivation is the most powerful way to learn, so why not encourage students to have it whenever you can? she asks. With that message, she is aligned with one of her colleagues at Aalborg University, Professor of AstrophysicsThomas Tauris, who has also recently realized the particular strength of PBL:- I was used to supervising students individually and was, admittedly, perhaps a little skeptical about the AAU model of group work before I came here. Fortunately, all my worries were put to shame. Now I understand better why AAU is repeatedly named Europe's best Engineering university, he says.Read more about Thomas Tauris' experience here: https://lnkd.in/d9nq7WUS Thanks for stopping by, Carrie - and good luck with your future PBL-endeavors here and in the U.S.! 💡🚀🎓#aaudk #videnforverden #ProblemBasedLearning #GlobalExchange 🌍✨

🚨This is huge!🚨Caltech is letting students qualify for admission via alternative options like Khan Academy will more schools follow❓"“Brilliant students exist in every single part of this world and in every single community, and this idea that families have to choose the future of their kids and where they’re going to go for college based on their ZIP Code seemed so unfair,”"Question for LinkedIn parents and future parents, would Khan Academy getting kids into college make you reconsider where you're willing to live?Would you consider being a digital nomad family or working and schooling remote if this became a proven track?#digitalnomad #schooldistricts #propertytax #costofliving #flexibility #homeownership #school #education #opportunity #travel #climaterisk

CALTECH CHANGES [ADMISSIONS] STANDARDS FOR STEMThe home of renowned physicist [Richard Feynman]:"In a major shift for one of the nation's most prestigious universities, Caltech announced Thursday it is dropping its longstanding admissions requirement for applicants to have completed calculus, chemistry and physics courses, noting that many students lack access to such curricula at their high schools.""Instead, Caltech will offer such students a chance to participate in free online courses, tutoring and a certification process through Khan Academy, culminating in an assessment exam that can be used for admission consideration."Our goal in admissions is to make barriers to access as low as possible for talented STEM students," Jared R. Leadbetter, professor of environmental microbiology and chair of the first-year admissions committee, said in a statement."The Caltech faculty recognize that one or more of the STEM courses that we require for admission may not be available to all students. The new policy aims to provide an avenue for such students to fill that gap in formal coursework by engaging in effective independent study of the relevant subject material.""Students who opt for the Khan Academy program will have to complete an exam and score at or above 90% to meet the Caltech course requirements. Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate test scores can also be used to meet the requirement."The Los Angeles Times, which first reported the Caltech admission changes, reported that, according to federal data, only 65% of public high schools offered calculus classes in the 2017-18 school year, with the course access more limited in large cities and rural areas. Chemistry classes were offered at 88% of high school, but only 74% offered physics."#Caltech #stem #physics #calculus #chemistry #admission #science https://lnkd.in/g4pdJVez

It’s a step in the right direction. There’s no reason why education districts, departments or ministries should hold a monopoly on UE entrance qualifications. While traditional qualifications will continue to play an important role as an academic vetting pathway for higher education, it is important to have a variety of journeys available towards the ultimate destination to cater for the wide contexts out students (akonga in Aotearoa) come from. This is awesome... Fantastic move..Lots of ways to learn... and get access to great university programs cc Jeff McCarthy Jonathan Powers, Ph.D. #education What if Enterprise used Khan academy to scale up people in things like Probability Theory set theory, and other topics related to business and moving towards new tools and new kinds of software as Jobs change?I'm hoping that Khan academy adds a poker course to teach probability Theory and Game Theory.. in a simple way... I'd take that course just to sharpen up.#math #khanacademy
